Personality: Cold passion is the best way to describe the core of what drives Margulis. He is a man of conviction and little mercy, making decisions based on practicality rather than morality. This is not, however, because he doesn't care. When he has a goal, he puts his entire being into achieving it and places it above all other priorities, risking his own life and those of others without a second thought.
On an individual scale, he is strict and often impersonal. He refers to people by surnames when he has reason to mention them individually, and in most cases doesn't bother with personal address at all. The exception is people who have made an impression on him. If someone manages to earn his genuine respect, he shows a more caring side, potentially even becoming somewhat invested in that person's safety. At the same time, he expects more of that person, placing more responsibility on their shoulders as his way of showing faith in their abilities.
Regardless of his personal opinion, he tends toward formality. Even his speech patterns carry an archaically stiff tone that sets him apart from most others. Despite this, he does show a distinct, if sarcastic, sense of humor and a strong dramatic streak. In fact, part of the reason for his archaic speech patterns may well be the impression they make.
The reason for his callousness toward people in general and distance even from individuals is actually fairly simple. His experiences with his world's culture of oppression and greed has destroyed his faith in humanity, convincing him that only a handful of people are worthwhile and the rest are useless. This is compounded with the great focus he has on the idea of individual motivation and will in a world that has largely grown complacent.
Another aspect of his harsh treatment of others has been arrogance and pride, but that has been tempered somewhat by discovering Wilhelm's manipulation. While still prideful and confident in his own abilities, he is no longer blind to his own faults. He acknowledges that he can be wrong and make mistakes and is less likely to follow orders or accept claims unquestioningly.
Wilhelm's revelation also broke him, to a large extent. With an unwillingness to ignore what he'd learned and return to his old ways but an inability to move on and find a new direction, he lost his will to live. The discovery has also left him questioning himself and even more bitter than before, believing his life's ambition to be hopeless and the many deplorable acts he's committed in the belief that they would serve the greater good worthless.
And it is the greater good that he thought he was serving. Despite his disgust with humanity, his goal has always been the betterment of the human race. From his ultimate goal of returning to mankind's homeland of Earth to his habit of taking in others who don't have a place in normal society and show traits he considers promising to even the unethical experiments he sacrificed billions of lives on, everything he's done has been in the hopes of leading humanity away from the dead end he sees them moving toward.
Also unusual is his open-mindedness with regards to non-humans and modified humans. While the rest of his organization seemed to show distaste or distrust for modified humans, he himself treats them no differently from anyone else and even befriended a super soldier he'd rescued from the cruelty of the Federation legal system. While artificial humans are often treated as objects, he outright refers to them as people. He is a man of many faults, but irrational biggotry is not one of them.
Abilities, Powers, Afflictions:
Swordsmanship: Margulis is, quite frankly, almost impossibly good with a sword. In an era of common beam weapons, he fights so effectively with a blade that he's capable of holding his own against enemies with even the most modern equipment.
Physical Enhancements: Part of the reason he's so absurdly dangerous with a sword is the fact that he is stronger and faster than any normal human by far. He can easily tear through concrete with his sword and can most likely slice through armored metal as well, as his rival who leans less toward physical strength than him can do the same. In terms of speed, he can step to the side quickly enough to leave an after image without even seeming to move, almost giving the illusion that he can teleport short distances. On top of that, he's shown to be able to jump to the top of a city building in a single leap from a standing position with little to no real difficulty. In difficult situations, he's capable of weaving a duplicate out of shadow that shares his consciousness or, through the use of four separate seals, placing all nearby enemies in permanent stasis.
Ethers: Ethers are his most versatile ability, functioning like typical video game magic. His specialty is fire and lightning, focused heavily on offense. His main use of this is to engulf his blade in flames or attack from a distance, but he's also capable of rendering himself briefly immune to either fire or lightning and using the energy from any such attack to heal existing wounds. They're also most likely the source of his physical enhancements.
Connection to the Zohar: As far as the setting is concerned, the important part of this is that he carries a fragment of a waveform belonging to an eldritch God within his subconscious. Contact with this waveform inspires primal fear in ordinary humans, making psychically delving into his mind a dangerous procedure.
Path Preference:
Chivalry: The obvious choice, Margulis is a warrior through and through. He's happiest, and most at home, on the battlefield, particularly against a strong opponent who can give him a good fight. He has an admitted preference for the flashy, and tends to get bored when left without anyone to fight for too long.
Discovery: Though not a scientist, Margulis is curious by nature. As much as he is a warrior, he's also a scholar and a historian, taking interest in ancient cultures, lost traditions and dead languages. To rediscover the land humanity came from was his dream back home, and he would be no less eager to unearth the history of civilization in Avalice. As a blacksmith, he can also contribute to producing weapons for other Scions, infused with Ether effects to make them far more effective than mundane blades.
Element Preference:
Fire: Much like Chivalry for a Path, fire is an obvious choice of element. It's his primary element as an Ether user, and fits his aggressive and passionate personality as well as the explosive temper hidden beneath his calm and reserved demeanor and his love of dramatics. It's an element of both destruction and nurturing, well suited to someone who would just as likely take in an abused and abandoned super soldier as he would slay anyone who stands in his way.
Ice: While fire represents the passionate and dramatic side of Margulis, ice is symbolic of the ruthless pragmatism with which he makes his decisions and the aloof, even distant way he interacts with most others. While he has an explosive, fiery temper when provoked in the right way, the majority of the time he maintains strict emotional control that lets him keep a cool head through constantly changing situations, even in the face of major setbacks. In addition, like ice, he is rigid and set in his path...but prone to breaking if pushed the wrong way.
Shadow: For fifteen years, the metaphorical shadows have been Margulis' home, moving outside the notice of the Galaxy Federation and pulling strings from behind the scenes. Secrecy and manipulation were his tools, which he wielded to great effect in getting the outcome he wanted. And even before then, he acted as a spy, keeping his true loyalties obscured from even his best friend. On a more literal level, his duplicate, Chhaya, is described as being “a perfect shadow”.
Anima Creature Description:

Margulis' Anima will be called Savasi, and the best description of her is 'beautiful abomination', a mix of draconic, avian and something uneartlhy entirely. Twenty feet tall at the highest point, she has the basic body shape of a velociraptor, with a long neck and large, feathery wings in place of arms, positioned where they would be on a bird. At the elbow of the wings, the limbs split off a human-like forearm, covered in downy feathers up to the wrist. The last wing joint has a more reptilian hand, with three fingers and a thumb and an eye in each palm. Other eyes are located on her face, her chest, her stomach, her upper back, her mid-back and the bottom of her central tail, for a total of thirteen. Two smaller tails flank the central one, looking at first like long pinions until they flex and bend. Two smaller pairs of wings are positioned between the base of her tails and her back-most pair of eyes and act as stabilizers, vaguely resembling a bird's spread tail when open. Her skin glows orange between soot-black scales, and her feathers and fur channel the light to give them the appearance of shifting flame. A pair of golden, branching horns spout from her forehead and spread around her head like a crown or halo. Her diet is omnivorous, but she has a penchant for eating hot coals and other smoldering objects and gains some sustenance from the heat.
Hatchling: As a hatchling, Savasi is be roughly the size of a Laborador puppy and solid black save for those areas completely free of scales. Her wings are completely naked and her hair is short and thin, resembling fleeting embers more than solid flame.
Egg: Savasi's egg is roughly three feet in diameter and ashen gray. The thin shell shows hints of the orange bioluminescence within as the unhatched Anima moves the portions of her body not covered with scales and it seems to perpetually shed pale gray flakes.
Anima Traits:
- Temperamental
- Down to fight
- Protective/caring of important people
- Inquisitive
- Proud
